NEOTREES Series, 2025
This project explores how digital design and bio-fabrication can transform local waste into living structures that nurture new ecologies.
Developed for 1 Triton Square, the work combines generative algorithms, 3D printing, and mycelium cultivation to propose prototypes for a bio-inclusive architecture that is both expressive and regenerative. The forms are generated through a custom algorithm designed to optimise growth conditions for mycelium. By creating intricate interstitial spaces, these structures help retain moisture and protect the organism from direct light, forming microclimates that support its development. The material is made from used coffee cups collected from 1 Triton Square worksite and the cafés within Regent’s Place, transformed into a 3D printable substrate - demonstrating a full circular process from waste to living architecture.
Each 3D printed artwork is inoculated with mycelium (rootlike network of fungus) allowing the organism to grow and bind the material before being dried. The resulting textures, colours, and organic forms speak to the unpredictable beauty of biological processes shaped by digital intent. They reflect an ongoing exploration of how digital tools can be used not to impose order but to collaborate with natural systems.
Through softness, tactility, and quiet complexity, it invites reflection on our relationship with living systems and how the built environment might evolve to support more-than-human futures.
